Birmingham Widening Access to Medical Sciences (BWAMS) believes the NHS should be representative of the people it serves. We work to support and inspire students from all backgrounds, particularly those underrepresented in medical sciences, to pursue healthcare careers and shape the future of the NHS. We have won the MedSoc Charity of the Year Shield for 2 years running!
In the past year we reached over 1,800 students across the UK. Our dedicated committee and volunteers organised 4 national conferences for Year 10 upwards and mock interviews for aspiring doctors and dentists, providing specialist admissions advice, engaging workshops and speaker panels entirely for free. Our popular secondary school outreach programme offers hands-on sessions and careers advice for healthcare degrees, whilst our Dr.eam Medicine programme provides longer-term support for Year 12 students making applications to medical school.
This year we launched our primary school outreach and hosted a webinar for students interested in graduate entry medicine. Our annual Research Rodeo also ensures students from widening participation backgrounds are still supported once they start university.
We have numerous events lined up for 2022/23 and hope to reach even more people!
